The marine industry is responsible for generating harmful emissions and pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon oxides (CO2), particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and heavy metals. These elements harm air quality, the environment, and human health. If no immediate actions are taken, the emissions from the marine industry are forecasted to rise by 50-250 % before 2050, undermining the objectives of the SDGs and the Paris Agreement.
Several local and global regulations are implemented to achieve a more sustainable shipping industry. Many countries worldwide have banned open-loop scrubbers to prevent the discharge of sulfuric wash-water, which causes ocean acidification, harming shellfish and corals. Moreover, the European Union’s Environmental Committee has recommended that Europe out-phase open-loop scrubbers and ban open-loop scrubber wash water discharge. Likewise, it is expected for the IMO to follow through with a global restriction.
