Backup power should not come at the expense of local air quality

Diesel generators remain essential to data centres and other critical infrastructure, providing dependable backup power when the grid is unable to meet demand. However, as more standby capacity is concentrated at large facilities, particulate emissions and their impact on local air quality are receiving greater attention.

In a recent article for Data Centre Insight, Brian Ambo Petersen, Sales Manager at LiqTech, discusses how operators can reduce particulate emissions without compromising the reliability of their backup-power systems.

Standby generators present a particular filtration challenge. They may remain inactive for long periods, run briefly during scheduled testing and then operate at high loads for hours or days during a power outage. These changing conditions affect exhaust temperatures, soot accumulation and filter regeneration. A successful diesel particulate filter solution must therefore be matched to the specific engine, operating profile, fuel quality and allowable back pressure.

The article also examines the role of silicon carbide DPF technology, catalytic coatings and early system integration. By considering emissions control during the design phase, operators and system providers can develop solutions that support both dependable backup power and cleaner local air.
