Ceramic membrane filtration at Aquacentrum Den Helder

A compact modular retrofit for a multi-pool municipal facility in the Netherlands

The case

LiqTech supplied five QlariFlow™ ceramic membrane filtration systems through its partner Lotec for the refurbishment of Aquacentrum Den Helder in the Netherlands. The compact, modular solution was integrated into an existing plant room with restricted space and limited access.

Location: Den Helder, North Holland, the Netherlands

Client: Aquacentrum Den Helder

Pool type: Municipal multi-pool aquatic facility

Project: Refurbishment of existing water-treatment infrastructure

Commissioning: Two phases completed in 2026

The challenge

Aquacentrum Den Helder operates Het Heersdiep, a municipal aquatic facility serving recreational swimmers, clubs, schools and swimming lessons. The centre includes indoor competition, training, instruction and recreation pools, together with an outdoor pool and diving facilities.

The refurbishment combined repairs to the pool-deck floors with replacement of the existing sand filters. The plant room had restricted space and limited access, so a conventional large-scale filtration replacement was not practical. The facility also needed to preserve as much pool availability as possible throughout the works.

The Solution

LiqTech supplied five QlariFlow filtration systems and two AutoCIP units through Lotec, LiqTech's exclusive distributor for pool solutions in the BENELUX region. Lotec provided the system design, engineering and project execution needed to integrate the new equipment into the existing facility.

The five systems incorporate 56 silicon carbide ceramic membranes in a compact, modular configuration: one QlariFlow 5 (100 m3/h), one QlariFlow 11 (220 m3/h), one QlariFlow 12 (220 m3/h) and two QlariFlow 14 (480 m3/h) systems. QlariFlow was selected because the modules could be brought through the facility's limited access points and arranged within the available plant-room footprint while supporting precise filtration and stable pool-water quality.

The work was divided into two phases so other parts of Het Heersdiep could remain open. Three systems entered service in the first phase, followed by the remaining two systems in the second phase. After commissioning, the facility reported that required water quality values were restored promptly and all pools returned to regular operation.

At completion in 2026, Den Helder was LiqTech's largest QlariFlow pool installation in Europe.

Cleaning Tools

Two AutoCIP units support automated cleaning in place across the installation. Automatic backwash and planned membrane cleaning help maintain stable filtration performance without conventional filter media.

Membrane

At the heart of each system are LiqTech's silicon carbide ceramic membranes. Their high permeability supports low-pressure operation, and the durable material tolerates repeated cleaning in commercial pool service.

Control

Integrated controls manage filtration and cleaning cycles. Remote monitoring provides access to operating data and alerts, supporting day-to-day oversight and service.

LiqTech Installation

  • Refurbishment of the existing filtration infrastructure at Het Heersdiep
  • QlariFlow 5, QlariFlow 11, QlariFlow 12 and two QlariFlow 14 systems
  • Five systems with a total of 56 silicon carbide ceramic membranes
  • Two AutoCIP units for automated cleaning in place
  • Delivered with Lotec as system designer, engineer and project-execution partner
  • Existing sand filters replaced with compact ultrafiltration systems
  • Most of the aquatic centre remained available during the phased works
  • All pools returned to regular operation after completion in August 2026
